The two tone furniture is all the rage right now, particularly two tone bedroom furniture. It’s not only sustainable and cost-effective, it’s so simple to achieve – you can master it in a matter of hours (we’ll show you how later on).

What colour scheme should I follow?
When it comes to upcycling your old furniture with the two tone effect, there are no limits to what colours you can use. Contrasting shades work best for an eye-catching colour mash-up. Take this wooden chair for example, we’ve painted the top half in this rich plum colour 78RR 06/137 and contrasted it with an off-white shade for the bottom half.
You could also stick to a single colour and keep some of the original wood exposed. The thinking behind this is that the wood that’s on show acts as the second tone, like you see here where we’ve only used the striking Rich Black on the chair. All you need to do is cover the wood you want to preserve with masking tape and paint the rest.

For our step-by-step guide, we’re showing you how to try the two tone effect on a chest of drawers. Wooden furniture is easy to paint, and as you’re freshening up something that’s relatively small, you can put the leftover paint that you have at home to good use. Here we used 50YR 36/263 with cool 50YR 66/091.
What you’ll need:
- Tape measure
- Masking tape
- Synthetic bristle brushes
- Sand paper
- Dusting brush
- Dulux Quick Dry Wood Primer
- Dulux Quick Dry Satinwood in chosen colours
Step-by-step guide:
- Apply with the Dulux Quick Dry Wood Primer
- Allow to dry (4h max) – depending on the size of your drawers
- Lightly sand and remove dust from drawers
- Measure to where the two colours will meet, mask it off, apply first colour
- Allow the first colour to dry, mask it off, apply the second colour
